Sterling Silver

Sterling silver is an alloy of silver. This means that it is composed of more than just the metal. Specifically, it is 92.5% silver by weight while 7.5% of it is created from other materials. Copper is the most common "other" material.

There is a practical reason for the sterling silver combination. Fine silver is too soft for the production of large objects that are functional. By utilizing an alloy, this issue can be overcome.

Sterling silver is usually alloyed with copper for particular reasons. This material option does more than increase its strength. It also preserves both its beauty and ductility. Other options include platinum and zinc.
